A vorpal weapon has a small chance of instantly decapitating an opponent
during a fight. This is almost totally fatal; even the slightest nick of
further damage will surely kill a victim that has suffered a vorpal blow. A
vorpalled opponent is treated as a regular kill for purposes of experience,
objects, and dying wishes, etc.
For those that hold a particular attachment to their head, there is a wish
that prevents vorpal blows from working on oneself- see 'help wishes'.
When you vorpal a target, their hit points are set to 1 and you must hit the
target again to kill it; you may (very rarely) see a miss after a vorpal
before the target dies. The decapitation damage that appears with a vorpal
is cosmetic and does not represent regular weapon damage or the exact total
hit points remaining on the target.
