Your primary communication channel as a newbie is the newbie channel. There you'll find Newbie Helpers who are ready to answer your questions and help with corpse recoveries when you die.
To use a channel, type its name and your message, eg. newbie Hello!
To toggle a channel on or off, type its name by itself, eg. advice will toggle the advice channel on or off.
For a list of all channels available to you, type channels. A lot of new channels become accessible to you as you level - i.e. the nobletalk channel will be available when you turn level 100.
It is suggested that you keep the newbie channel on, you will find a lot of common questions answered there.
The newbie channel will stay with you until you turn level 26 or reach 201 hours, whichever comes first, at which time you should seek help on other channels like gossip or the question channel.
