I will prefer to have the portal spell in real life. The limitation of the spell is restricted to the imagination of the human mind. The advantages of transporting oneself or others are priceless.

Time is one of the advantages. Time spent on traveling is no longer an issue, and can be better well-spent on other areas. Business travels or family tours are no longer a hassle. The commercial sector will see an increase in revenues with more transactions being made and decrease in expenditures on business travel fees.
Resources are another consideration. Traveling via the human mind will no longer deplete our already exhausting fossil fuels. There are no longer needs for vehicles, planes and ships or even space crafts that consume it. Fuels can be used for other purposes.
Indirectly, with the cutting of petroleum usage, our beloved planet earths ozone is saved. Pollution will be greatly reduced through the elimination of vehicle pollutants world wide.
Space exploration will be greatly enhanced through universal portal usage.

Traveling from point to point in the galaxy is no longer a dream. Living in outer space will be much like staying next door to your school or place of work.
Of course, if this spell is implemented in RL, there should be a world-wide man-hunting for the wrecked Osama Bin Laden, unless there really is a no-gate room in his mountains
