My time had come. After years upon years of struggle and pain, I stood at last before the large double doors of the magnificent Cathedral of Midgaard. I took a moment to savor the scene and admired the Cathedral's vast trailing spires as they faded into the sky. Taking a deep breath, I stepped through the broad double doors.

It was quiet. There was nary a whisper, and as I walked down the nave, my dusty plated boots left both sooty footprints and resounding echoes in the Cathedral's main chamber. The few souls who were kneeling in prayer looked up in alarm; their eyes widened as they set sight upon a superhero. Ignoring their stares I walked forward towards the altar and stopped under the apse. As I looked up from under the dome, dazzling light from the stained-glass roof danced before my eyes. I knelt before the altar and prayed for safety and guidance.

As I made my towards the Chamber of Rebirth, time seemed to slow and I saw every movement and heard every wisp of breath. The Chamber lay below a quiet alcove on the side of the Cathedral. A shiver of anticipation ran down my spine as I came closer.

The Chamber of Rebirth was a relatively small but warm and sturdy room. There was immediate silence as my boots were quieted by the lush rug resting on the floor. I stepped inside, and a weathered but gracefully aged man came forward and extended his hand. "Welcome, child." As we shook hands, I felt suddenly more alert and aware. He spoke a few words of advice and blessing, then stepped back, watching me. I looked around and drank in the quiet warmth of the Chamber. I began the process.

Piece by piece, I removed my armor. The breastplate that had protected me through so many battles. The helm that had guided my way. The gloves that had gripped my weapons. The boots that had hastened my travels.

At last I sheathed my twin daggers, knowing that one day they would sing death once more. I was ready to be reborn.

Closing my eyes, I took one last deep breath. And then I spoke the words. Instantly there was a rush of thunderous sound and a blinding flash of light that pierced my eyelids; I reflexively threw up my hands and crouched against the sheer energy. Daring to open my eyes, I wondered at the maelstrom of colors--mixed amber and electrifying blues surrounded me as waves upon waves of torrential energy flooded around and through my being. I began to feel lighter and emptier, and it seemed as if I were being levitated. My arms flung out, exposing my chest. As I rose higher, my back began to arch upward as my chest seemed to seek the sky. I screamed in pain and ecstasy as I felt my life force pouring at out of me. And then nothing.

I awoke, naked and shivering at the guild gates.
