How to Rob the Bank in Midgaard
Hey there! I've been seein' ya sittin' in front of the bank for days
now. I think I know what yer up to. You think I'm just an old
drunkard wastin' time the Grunting Boar, eh? Well, come sit here and
hear me out. I'm bored and in need of a company. Say, why don't I buy
you a drink.
Alright, nothin' better than having a young'un listenin' to ya while
sippin' this fine ale. Well, start drinkin' and stop lookin' at
the bank, will ya? Listen, if yer thinkin' of them gold, just fuhget
it. It ain't worth yer effort...
This happened many springs ago, while my eyes and hearing were still
as sharp as wolfen's and elf's combined. There had been talks about
the new bank that would work like none before: with magic!
At that time, you would see a banker working behind solid iron bars
in the Midgaard bank. Gold transactions were recorded laboriously by
the banker on duty and disputes often happened. People simply could
not trust their gold fully to the bank.
Rumor had it that during the bank conversion, there would be a brief
instant when the bank room was empty for the first time since it had
been built. I heard almost everyone in the Grunting Boar (yes, we
already had Grunting Boar then) talking about trying their luck at
that special moment.
The officials knew about this, of course. They announced that the
punishment if caught tempering with the bank would be banishment from
the realm after being stripped of all powers and posessions. That was
the worst punishment one can get.
Because of the perceived impossibility of the task coupled with the
horrifying punishment, the talks' direction switched to praises of the
new bank. The new bank was what we have now.
The day came when the Midgaard bank was closed for an hour. A lot
of people stood around the bank entrance to watch the process. One
great wizard and a group of officials entered it to make the change.
After a few moments, they all came back out. It was then that a young
man, unknown to all, slipped into an opening beneath the fountain
at the temple square. Nobody knew, except the young man of course,
about a small passage that led up to the bank from there.
The great wizard, with the closed bank door on his back, muttered
magic words. Then, he opened the door and people started flocking
into the bank to test it out. No physical transaction required and
certainly no banker to deal with.
The young man gave the fountain a little push before joining the crowd
in the bank. His clothing seemed a little heavier but of course
nobody paid any attention to him. He must had at least tripled his
account that day!
He got cursed because of that though. Rumor is that he has to spend
his gold for others enjoyment daily. And he likes to hang around in
the Grunting Boar.
